Have you guys been taking part in the Karen Templar's Summer of Basics?
It's a June to August make-along where the idea is to make three beautiful and hardworking basic garments for your wardrobe in the space of three months.I've only loosely been following along (and since we're now halfway through August already this is a super late entry!), but I thought it would be nice to get my plans written down somewhere.
The Maya Top by Marilla Walker
I've been trying to up my sewing game lately, and this is the perfect pattern to ease me back into things. This is one project that I've actually finished already, so I can tick it off the list! I used an inky black linen viscose that has been in my stash for a few years now, and I'm absolutely thrilled with it. I think I wore it for about three days straight after I finished it!
Carbeth Cardigan by Kate Davies
I've mentioned this before, but Carbeth has been on my radar since it came out in January. My wardrobe has been missing a heavier weight cardigan, so this will fill the gap nicely. I've earmarked this beautiful green yarn for this project, and with only a couple of weeks of the #summerofbasics left it'll be challenge to get it knit up in time, but I'm hoping the chunkier yarn will help it to zip along.
The Hemlock Tee / The Scout Tee from Grainline Studio
The third garment has been the hardest for me to decide on.
I've long admired Jen's Hemlock Tee. It is the exact type of garment that I gravitate towards in ready to wear clothes and would be a great opportunity for me to finally try out my serger, which has been sitting unused in its box for an embarrassingly long time.
The snag is that a) I'm terrified of the serger, b) I'm not sure I have enough thread to set it up, and c) I'm TERRIFIED of the serger!! In fact, if you have any tips then please let me know - I could use all the help!
I've read that you can technically make Hemlock on a regular sewing machine, but for some reason I've decided that I want it to be my first serger project and so I'd feel like I was cheating if I did it any other way.
If I don't manage to pluck up the courage/thread for a serger project I shall console myself with a Scout Tee. I'm definitely going to be making one at some point, and since I love my Maya so much I think it'd be interesting to try a different style and construction to see how they compare.
So, that's my loose and tentative plan! I think it'd be fun to try and meet the deadline, but since it's tight I'm not going to hold myself to it!
